Emerald Class

Welcome to Emerald Class!

 

Our PE days are Tuesday and Friday. The children can come to school dressed in their PE kit for the day.

 

Every child has a reading book and reading diary. Please encourage daily reading. Reading books and reading diaries must be signed and returned to school every day.

In Art, Emerald Class used objects from the environment to create different shapes, lines and patterns. We were inspired by artists, such as, Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy.

In RE, we discussed the Jewish celebration, Rosh Hashanah. We had a taste of some of the most popular Rosh Hashanah treats!

Emerald Class know lots about the United Kingdom. We have been using an atlas to identify the countries that make up the UK and also the seas that surround them.

Today, in Science, Emerald Class became leaf detectives! We took a stroll around our local area and identified different types of trees.

In PE, Emerald Class have been continuing to develop their ball skills. We have been focusing on rolling and bouncing the ball in a controlled way so we can chase and collect it. We then practised rolling and bouncing the ball for a partner to chase and collect. We were super!

What an end to the half term! No one does Jubilee celebrations like Hetton Primary School! Thank you grown-ups for coming along and joining in the fun!

In celebration of the Queen's Jubilee, we participated in a 'dancing through the decade' workshop. Emerald Class have definitely got the moves!

We also took part in the Jubilee draw-a-long with Steve Antony; the author of our current English text, The Queen's Hat.

Today we watched and discussed the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. We then had our own coronation ceremony and became a King or Queen for the afternoon!

Emerald Class had a special visit from our local police community support officers, Louise and Sam. We found out what the ladies do in our local community, and how they could help us if needed. Plus, we got the chance to try on some police uniform!

This term, in History, our focus is the Queen and the royal family. Today, we discussed another important historical event: The royal wedding of Prince William and Kate. We used our Art skills to create a beautiful wedding album.

In Design Technology, Emerald Class have been focusing on cooking healthy foods. We designed our own healthy wrap/pitta pizza, and today we followed instructions to prepare and make it!

Emerald Class love Easter Maths jobs! We have been consolidating our understanding of length and height, and weight and capacity. Plus, we always love to practise our number bonds to 10 - we are so speedy now!

In Geography, Emerald Class have been exploring the Amazon Rainforest. We have discussed the physical features and human features that can be found there, and how it is different to our local area. We created our own Amazon Rainforest inside a shoebox, showing lots of physical features, such as, trees, plants, waterfalls, and the Amazon River. We also remembered that there are some human features too, built by the Amazonian people, including, houses and bridges.

Emerald Class had so much fun visiting Beamish Museum today. It was the perfect way to end our History unit focusing on toys. We played with some old toys from when our Grandparents were little and discussed how they are different to our toys today. We also explored the museum sites and had a ride on the tram to see how buildings and transport have changed too.

Today, Emerald Class had a visit from All Stars Cricket. We had so much fun practising our batting and ball skills!

In Maths, Emerald Class have been exploring weight and mass. We used balance scales and cubes to find the mass of different objects around our classroom. We then compared the objects using key vocabulary such as, 'heavier' and 'lighter'.

Today, in Science, Emerald Class had fun in the sunshine exploring how to create shadows. We made shadow puppets and drew around our friend's shadow. We found out that a shadow is made when a solid object blocks the light from hitting a surface.

Emerald Class created some beautiful sunflowers to show they are thinking of the people of Ukraine.

What an exciting day we have had! Emerald Class have been responsible for taking care of our tortoise friends, Charlie and Arthur. We have learned lots of facts about them in preparation for our non-chronological report writing next week.

In Maths, we worked together to measure the length and height of different objects around our classroom using cubes. We discussed which objects were the longest or tallest, and which were the shortest.

Today, in Science, we discussed how we could make a dark place light. We closed the blinds, turned off the lights and went under the table with a blanket to make a 'dark den'. We then used different light sources to investigate which made our dark den the lightest.

This term, in PE, Emerald Class are focusing on developing their ball skills. Today, we practised maintaining control of the ball throughout all of our movements. We did a super job!

This term, in Art, our focus is printing. Emerald Class explored different objects they could use to create direct prints, overprints and repeating patterns, using the primary colours.

Emerald Class are super mathematicians! We can use our number bonds to 10 to find number bonds to 20. Our Numicon monsters helped us too.

In English, our new text is 'The Gruffalo'. We love retelling our own version of the story using our wonderful story spoons.

This term, in Science, Emerald Class are learning about push and pull forces. Today we went on a forces walk around school and used post-its to label objects that use a push or a pull force to move.

Today in PE, we have been practising our gymnastics. We can make lots of different floor shapes including, straight, tuck and star shapes. We worked in pairs facing each other, taking turns as the ‘mirror’ and ‘reflection’. The ‘mirror’ performed different shapes and the ‘reflection’ copied.

This week Emerald Class have been exploring numbers to 20. We are brilliant at representing numbers in lots of different ways and have begun to partition numbers into tens and ones.

First day back at school after the Christmas holidays and Emerald Class are already impressing Miss Purdham and Mrs Atkinson! We used our super reading skills to follow instructions for making jam sandwiches - they were so yummy!

Christmas party day! Not only have we danced our socks off and played lots of party games, we also had a visit from a very special guest...

Today we decorated our tree with our wonderful Christmas baubles (designed and made all by ourselves!) before impressing our grown ups with our beautiful carol singing.

We can compare numbers within 10 using vocabulary such as, 'less than, greater than and equal to'. We can even use symbols too!

We had a wonderful day at Hardwick Park. What a glorious day it was....we wrapped up warm, explored the park and learned about seasonal change and how animals in the woodland prepare for winter. We were so well behaved - the ladies leading our group were super impressed! Miss Purdham and Mrs Atkinson were as proud as punch!

In History, we are looking at how things have changed. We looked at photographs of telephones that our grandparents would have used and then we made our own string telephone to talk to our friends.

You should see our writing about Mr Bear! He couldn't get to sleep because of all the noises on his camping trip. We had super fun acting it out and it really helped us to think of some exciting words to use.

Today we used our drama skills to act out the story 'A Very Noisy Night'. Tomorrow we are going to begin our new story about a character who also cannot get to sleep because of lots of noises... I wonder if he feels the same as Big Mouse!
