Emerald Class

Welcome to Emerald Class!

I am Miss Purdham, Year 1's Class Teacher.

I am Mrs Morris, Year 1's Class Teacher.

Please see below links to our RWI Phonics virtual classroom.

Special friends, Fred talk, read the word!

In Geography the children have been learning about rainforest. They have learnt about the Amazon Rainforest and the animals that live in the rainforest. The children made puppet animals and a model rainforest using their knowledge and understanding of what a rainforest looks like and what you would find in the rainforest.

Wednesday 3rd July

Last week, the children came to visit my in Year 2. It was lovely getting to know the children and finding out a little bit about them. On Thursday, we spent the day exploring some of the core books for Year 2 that we will be reading next year. The children were able to get to know some of the books and to share them with each other.  We also had mystery books and we had to try and predict what the book would be about - it was The Tunnel by Anthony Browne.  On the afternoon, we went outside and the children worked in teams to build a tunnel of their own and thought about where the tunnel might take them.

I am really looking forward to seeing more of the children over the rest of this term and teaching them in September when they join Year 2.

Mrs Foster

W.B 17.06.24

Another super week for Year 1. We have finished writing our own story based on Yeti and the Bird but we changed the characters. We chose to write about a cat and mouse, a lion and mouse or a bear and mouse.

In Maths, we have been learning all about money. We have looked at the different coins and we have been super mathematicians. We have worked out how many 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins we would need to buy different items from Mrs Morris' shop.

In Science, we have been learning about the weather. We made excellent weather forecasters and presented the weather to the rest of Emerald Class.

Beamish 13.06.24

We have had the most amazing day at Beamish. The children have walked their little legs off! They loved having the opportunity to play with the old toys - they even made the own toy that children from the 1950s would have played with. They got to play on the park, have ice cream and then wonder round Beamish.

W.B 3.6.24

What a super start to the half term. Year 1 have worked really hard this week and have enjoyed exploring all their new topics. In English, we are finishing off our story of Yeti and the Bird. We are going to write our own version of the story with different characters. Mrs Morris is very excited to read them. In Maths, we practised counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We then explored making groups of 2, 5 and 10 with different resources. In Geography, we started to learn about rainforests. We looked on a map to find where rainforests are located. In DT, we explored finger puppets. Later in the term we are going to make our own finger puppets. This week we looked at how they were made and their purpose.

W.B 20.05.24

Wow - what a super busy week Emerald Class have had! We have retold the story of Yeti and the Bird using adjectives and interesting sentence openers. Mrs Morris was very impressed. In Maths we have been measuring using diennes and then rulers. We talked to our partners about the longest and shortest objects we had measures.

In Science, we carried out an investigation. We investigated what plants need to grow. We discovered they need water and sunlight. In ICT, we had so much fun programming our beebots. One even bumped into Mrs Morris' toes! In Art, we have been looking at college and today we used contrasting colours to college our initals! Take a look at some of our masterpieces!

Emerald Class have been working super hard! In English we have started our new story - Yeti and the Bird. We can't wait to retell the story! We have thought of lots of fantastic adjectives to describe the yeti. In Maths, we have continued to look at numbers to 20. We have looked at doubling and halving. We are beginning to use our number facts to 10 to help us with calculations within 20. In ICT, we have been looking at algorithms. Last week we had to pretend our partners were robots and give them specific instructions/directions to get from one place to another. Today, we have looked at algorithms in songs. We danced to the Hokey Cokey and then came up with our own moves and put them into an algorithm to tell our friend!

Super work Year 1 - keep it up.

Thursday 2nd May 2024

Emerald Class achieved the goal of making a jam sandwich by completing each 'stepping stone' one by one! We then discussed how we all learn differently. Some of us learn best by watching, or listening, where as others learn best by doing.

Monday 15th January 2024

Emerald Class can position the numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 on a number line. We know a special trick to help us... We can find the midpoint, 5, first! This will help us to position our other numbers accurately.

Then, we tried to discover what our alien friend Beegu was trying to say; transforming our nonsense words into a rhyming real word.
